Do not get travel documents here. We had to stay 3 extra days in Portugal due to not following the EU requirements when we moved abroad a few years ago. Was a client for many years and just returned in April where we have not wanted to venture out - they had no records of my pet so I had to start over as a new client to make an appoinment. Required CC - waiting on hold for 10 minutes then got cut off after not telling me that I would be put on hold. Frustrating to feel like this was about the money instead of listening ... read more

This has been my Pet Hospital since I got my dog. In the past year I have needed them for 2 problems that was serious. One needed stitches and the other he swollen something that needed to looked at. Both during the week and during the day. I was told so sorry can not see him. This is the place I thought would take care of my dog. Needless to say I will be finding another Vet!! Not caring at all So sorry I even started with them

Business response:

Sharon, we are not set up as an emergency facility - we are a general practice. We can and certainly do take emergencies, but those that we are equipped to handle. Yesterday, when your dog was choking, we advised you that that is something that we are not equipped to deal with and advised you to go immediately to an emergency facility. Choking is not always just pulling something out of his throat - sometimes it requires immediate sedation and extraction and possible resuscitation. Wouldn't you rather be at a facility th... read more

I was with them for 12 years. My cat is now 12. I was SO in love with them and sent so many people to them. I am a very devoted, responsible, loyal person & I was going to ride it out with these folks forever more, even after moving to the Valley. Dr. Hernandez was my main Vet & i LOVED her. She was very gifted, professional, & i felt i was in the best of hands with her. The entire staff was also wonderful all these years. And then, things went south. Looking back, i noticed that when I chose to HEAL my cat from irritable bo... read more

This used to be such a fantastic veterinary office but now it's worse than awful. Over the last 10 years we've spent over $30,000 here with various procedures for our 3 labs. We don't get our flea preventatives from the vet because they charge 30-40% more than Chewy but until recently they'd always send the prescription to Chewy to fill. Now though, they make you drive to pick the prescription up, and to compound things, they don't tick the refill box but instead force you to go back every time. The owner, Mark, a man who's ... read more

Business response:

Alex, the actual story is a bit different. You were given the written prescription that you asked for. When you realized that there were no refills available, you began yelling. Mark went back to your doctor to confirm the fact that there were no refills available as your dog's exam would expire within the refill time. An annual exam is required for prescription medication. THIS IS THE LAW as well as having your dog's best interest in mind. When told this, you began yelling again and called the veterinarian a f***ing c... read more

I really wanted to find our new local vet, but unfortunately my husband and I didn't have the greatest experience with our dog. We took our 2.5 healthy dog to get an overall checkup, but also to address some excessive paw licking. As a first time patient, it was very off putting to receive a call from Dr. Hillebrand listing off several recommendations/costs/procedures which ended up totaling $500. I prefer doctors that start minimal or even recommend alternative suggestions that would be cheaper or even lifestyle changes. Ne... read more

Business response:

Hey Jillian, I’d like to speak with you about your experience. When you have the time, call me at 310-393-8218 and ask for Kirstin. We are always trying to figure out ways to do things better, but if I don’t hear first hand, I can’t talk to our managers. Thanks in advance!

This place has really gone down hill. We have had to call THREE times to get lab results for our pet. We brought in the sample over two weeks ago and were billed for the results which have not received. They are two busy to care about your pet, but not busy enough to bill you.

Business response:

I’m sorry you feel this way Susan. Your human doctor does not call you at all, unless there is something wrong with your lab results. Your veterinarian is working very hard, with limited hours and limited staff, to do her best to service all of our patients. We tell you, from the start, that, if your pet’s lab results are normal, you will get a call, but that sick patients take priority. Your pet’s lab results were normal! Good for you. If they had not been, we would have reached out immediately. You’ve been a client for o... read more

One of the worst experience of my life. I moved recently from New York to LA and I needed a loving vet for my cat, I decided to go with this place according to the review and location. It was a mistake as it looked like a shop to get money from you without showing any sincere care for your pet. I had a hard time to get a chance to talk to the doctor and hear her advice. I couldn't trust their advise as I wasn't sure if they actually checked my cat's health history. It was a one time visit! I found another vet who loves m... read more

I’m very sorry you feel this way. As you’ve requested and received copies of Lucian’s medical records, you can see that Dr.Miller did indeed go over his previous medical history and discussed it with you. Your presenting issue was that Lucian has been diagnosed with proteinuria and wanted to recheck his liver and urine protein values. While he was here, Dr. Miller ran a complete bloodwork panel that included your recheck requests. And, as he was already on Benazepril for his heart, she checked his blood pressure. When the l... read more

Horrible Staff - writing on behalf of my grandmother.

Business response:

I’m sorry to hear this. Could you be more expansive? I’d like to hear what happened to make your grandmother so upset.

This response from Santa Monica Pet is totally NOT our experience or many other former clients. There was very little cohesion between the vets and they trade days to the degree that they had no idea that our dog was really dying and they never checked in and never showed any care. It is completely false that Sue Downing charged us for the many phone call she did with great care you may find it difficult to believe that people can be that generous but they were and Santa Monica Pet simply did not show that care at any tim... read more

Business response:

That is so false. Dr. Hernandez is one of our most popular doctors for her bedside manner and patient care. Our doctors round several times a day on cases, and as more than half have been with SMPMC for over 10 years, they have no issue passing cases back and forth. How can Dr. Downing be a complete stranger if your so familiar with her as to know her name? And I guarantee that Dr. Downing, as an oncologist, does charge for her time.
