I've been taking my two cats to this vet practice for a few years. Always satisfied with the service and EASY appointment scheduling. The girls at the front are always helpful and welcoming. I've seen a few different vets but I felt taken care of with each Dr. And or staff member. I recently took my older guy in for what I assumed was just a tooth absces. It was not just a tooth problem. Dr. Harris went the extra mile for me to find out what was going on. She consulted other experts and personally called me to follow up and... read more

I really didn't like this vet office. Went in with a stray kitten and was told it would be $1,500 to have her spayed. When I said that seemed pretty high the vet suggested that perhaps I shouldn't keep the cat because I would need to be prepared to spend several thousand dollars for her first 6 months. (um - what?). The vet didn't seem very knowledgeable either; seemed to just work from a set of talking points. All I wanted was to have her checked out - listen to her breathing and heart and de-worm her. But all they wa... read more

Business response:

We’re truly sorry to hear that your visit didn’t meet your expectations. Our goal is always to provide thorough information so pet owners can make informed choices about their animal’s care—especially for new kittens, where there’s often a lot to cover regarding vaccines, spay/neuter timing, and preventive health. We certainly never want anyone to feel pressured or overwhelmed, and we apologize if that’s how it came across. Spay costs can vary depending on age, size, and medical status, and we’re always happy to provide a r... read more

extreme upcharge staff was kind though. 865 for a new stray cat with its core packages

Business response:

I’m sorry you felt that way. The majority of that cost was to ensure your kitten didn’t have ringworm or internal parasites—both of which can affect people as well as pets. Stray kittens often carry things like this, so these tests are an important step to keep everyone in your home safe and healthy.

They over-medicated our very small, frail cat Arthur, and we picked up a practically lifeless cat, he died a few hours later on our bed. We were very very upset, really devistasted by this unnecessary loss, and they're not supportive , and no condolences , so we've been going elsewhere for years.

BEWARE: New ownership since 2023 has dramatically changed this once-great family practice. Brought my dog in for routine wellness check. Left with permanent mobility issues after an unauthorized invasive procedure. Their response? Weeks of ignored calls, disconnected lines, and unfulfilled promises while my dog suffered. Price gouging is standard: Thousands quoted for routine dental cleaning (other clinics charge hundreds) Aggressive upselling during basic visits Using pet health concerns as leverage for expensive procedure... read more

Business response:

SMPMC is a family (veteran and woman) owned and operated small business and has been in the same family for over 40 years. Our practice philosophy revolves around providing the highest quality veterinary care without compromise, the family and the Golden Rule – we treat our clients as if they were family and hope for reciprocal treatment. We are the only privately owned animal hospital in Santa Monica that is AAHA accredited and has been for more than 20 years. On occasion we encounter a pet owner whose expectations for wha... read more

I was referred to this clinic and at first I was very excited about this appointment. DR. Hernandez seemed very helpful when my partner took my adopted dog in who I saved from the kill shelter. When my partner and I both came in she had a horrible attitude towards me right off the bat and my dog was scared of her. She put the choke collar on him and dragged him back. He cried and was scared to death. Now anytime we go to any vet he is terribly scared and shaking. It's frustrating to trust someone with your baby and them be m... read more

They have BS policies about yearly exams to get your pets prescribed flea medication. Middle of the summer and would not give my dogs his his flea meds. With out an exam by the end it would have 3-400 visit. Supposedly it's the law? No matter my doctor is more lenient with r prescriptions then that are. The manager was defensive and rude and threatened to hang up on me because I said " this is BS" that's Santa Monica for you. I went into LA county and got the medication.

Do not go to this vet they are con artists that only care about money and not your animals well-being. The doctor is extremely unprofessional very combative and an extremely nasty lady that only cares about money. I'm begging you for your own sake and for your animal's sake do not go to this vet! They used to be great however over the last few years after their doctor changed they became terrible and money hungry. If you don't believe me take your dog there pay $150 just to get in the door and see what kind of test and thing... read more

I think that unfortunately, after 6+ years of going to SMPMC, I need to leave. Similar to other recent reviews you'll see, the staff is genuinely wonderful and the doctors are so helpful. What *kills* me is their weirdly predatory upsells during simple (or not so simple appointments.) A simple routine check-up comes with recommendations for: - A $2,500 teeth cleaning - Dog vitamins/probiotics for $60+ - Specialty food - Flea medication - Ear medication If I accepted everything,my appointment would come to $3500 for an a... read more
